Radiolaria, 2023

THE ARTWORK

Radiolaria draws inspiration from San Diego's playful ethos and the beauty of observation. The design takes viewers on a visual journey, from the cosmos and particle physics, to the seas, celebrating the wonder of nature by uniting humans, mammals, plant life, and the cosmos.

THE ARTIST

Caledonia Curry (b. 1977), known by the artist name Swoon, is a visionary artist with a rich career spanning over two decades. Through her powerful artwork, she delves into the intricacies of human existence, using creativity as a catalyst to reimagine communities with a focus on justice and equity. Swoon's portfolio encompasses a diverse range of projects, from monumental public art to intimate portraits and immersive installations, often developed collaboratively within various public spaces. Her ventures include crafting sculptural rafts that sailed the Mississippi River and the Adriatic Sea, providing homes to numerous artist adventurers. She has also collaborated with communities in Haiti and the United States to rebuild after natural disasters and economic challenges. In her recent work, Swoon courageously explores her own family's intergenerational trauma, infusing deeply personal narratives into her creations. Her remarkable journey has led to major exhibitions at prestigious venues like the Museum of Modern Art, MoMA PS1, Brooklyn Museum, Mori Art Museum in Tokyo, and the Institute of Contemporary Art in Boston. Notably, her first museum retrospective, "The Canyon: 1999–2017," took place at the CAC Cincinnati, while her artworks grace collections at institutions such as MoMA, Tate Modern, Detroit Institute of Arts, and MASS MoCA. Swoon's art leaves an indelible mark on the world, inspiring transformative change and evoking profound emotions through her masterful storytelling.

Radiolaria is located inside the Edge building, accessible from the central pedestrian paseo on the ground level. The piece continues upstairs to the Eve event venue on the fourth floor.
